She’s a wife, a 3 times internally best-selling author, a TEDx speaker (and her talk has been viewed over 3 million times), and she’s one of the funniest writers I’ve ever read, so it’s hopefully pretty obvious why I consider her, to be like, my idol? Sarah Knight, whose first book, The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a Fuck (not to be confused by The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Very different author. Very different book. Although actually more similar than you might think. Which we talk a ton about). But anyway, Sarah’s first book blew her onto the scene and up the charts and rocked a lot of people’s lives, and since then she quickly banged out two follow up books, Get Your Shit Together and You Do You, both of which continue to rock a lot of people’s’ lives. Sarah embraced the title of the “anti-guru” which actually came out of a British magazine (The Observer) and really hit home for her and her publishing team because she’s not a person wanting to preach a lot of advice or use any kind of shaming tactics like the typical “gurus.”
Sarah previously worked in book publishing (for 15 years – and edited over 100 books during this time), but then she started to become depressed by the corporate environment and decided to F*CK IT ALL! Except she wisely spent a year saving money to quit her job and move from Brooklyn to the Dominican Republic, but then had a sudden influx of creative energy and the inspiration to write her first book which BLEW THE F*CK UP.
Is it like Marie Kondo’s book, The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up? Well, she calls her book an affectionate parody of Marie’s book. When she read Marie Kondo’s book she felt like the idea of tidying physical space could expand to tidying your mental space.

Having a “Fuck budget:” choosing what to give your fucks to and how to have autonomy over your decision making. This allows you to have more time and energy to find what makes you happy. It simplifies what it means to say I don’t have time, energy, or money to care about a given item.
What to do about the things you “ought” to give your fucks to? Find the compromise that doesn’t annoy you
- Ex: In the case of exercise, you can walk on the beach (as Sarah does) – making it an enjoyable experience
- Some things you do HAVE to give a fuck about – and getting your shit together helps you accomplish those in the most efficient way possible (like going to work to pay the bills)
How visualization helps:
Ex: rejecting or accepting an invitation to a birthday party – visualize/think about how you would FEEL at the event and really put yourself in your own shoes to make a decision about whether that’s worth your “fucks.”
Her Not-Sorry Method: it’s all about being honest, politely.
- Decide what you don’t give a fuck about
- Stop giving a fuck about those things
Do not have to feel guilty or SORRY if you are honest and polite about it.
- Make your decision right away – don’t hem and haw
- Don’t RSVP and then cancel last minute
The Power of Negative Thinking:
When you’re motivated more by negativity than positivity – take what’s wrong with your life and confront it, rather than chasing after aspirations
Mental decluttering and mental redecorating: Rather, “hang” the compliments and words that make you feel good. Mean comments are like “unflattering photos” – you don’t want to hang those.
“Good” selfish: Self-care, making a decision that is benefiting you and not hurting anybody else.
A self-ISH things Sarah does: She hates getting up early – so she schedules things around not getting up early. She asks herself – do you want someone else to be somewhere to please you when they don’t really want to be there? You have to let other people do themselves too.
Sarah’s favorite plant-based restaurant: Since leaving NYC, the food her husband makes for her! (LUCKY.) Like his roasted eggplant and homemade hummus.
Her most used kitchen tool: His – trusty chef knife. Hers – the coffee machine
Her favorite plant to eat: Mushrooms – which she realized after having a mushroom tart at Blue Hill in NY.
